Major streets across Osogbo, Osun State capital were largely deserted on Saturday as residents stayed indoors while about 1.9 million registered voters are expected to participate in the state governorship election.
The election, which is taking place across the 30 local government areas of the state, has attracted heightened attention as voters choose the next governor of Osun State.
As early as the morning hours, usually busy roads and commercial areas in Osogbo recorded low human and vehicular movement, with many shops and business premises remaining closed.
The development was largely attributed to the election and the security measures put in place to ensure a peaceful conduct of the exercise.
Residents were seen limiting their movements, while those heading to their polling units did so mainly for the purpose of casting their ballots.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had made preparations for the election across the state, with electoral officials deployed to polling units to conduct the exercise.
The election is being keenly contested by candidates of several political parties, with the incumbent governorAdola Adeleke and other major contenders seeking the mandate of the electorate.
Security personnel have also been deployed to different parts of the state to maintain law and order and prevent activities capable of disrupting the electoral process.
The outcome of the election is expected to determine who will govern Osun State for the next four years, as voters exercise their constitutional right to choose their preferred candidate.
