Lagos Govt Breaks Silence on Sanwo-Olu Resignation Rumours, Holds Meeting with Deputy

The Lagos State Government has firmly addressed the rumors regarding Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, clarifying that there is no truth to the reports suggesting his resignation.

Through an official statement, the administration countered claims that the Governor was “ordered to resign on health grounds,” describing such allegations as “pure fabrication” and “falsehoods.”

Gboyega Akosile, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, expressed strong disapproval of the reports. He noted that these claims represent a troubling trend of disinformation intended to stir unnecessary tension within the state.

Akosile reassured the public that Governor Sanwo-Olu remains in excellent health and is fully capable of carrying out his constitutional duties.

He maintained that the Governor is both mentally and physically fit, continuing his work for the people of Lagos without interruption.

The clarification became necessary following a viral story alleging that the Governor was under immense pressure to step down, with his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, reportedly preparing to take over the leadership of the state.

“These reports are not only false, they are an intentional attempt to mislead the public,” Akosile stated. He further clarified that “Governor Sanwo-Olu is not under any pressure to resign, nor has anyone demanded his resignation. The Governor is well, in excellent health, and continues to fulfill his duties as Lagos State’s leader with commitment and dedication.”

In what was described as a standard administrative and  political interaction, Governor Sanwo-Olu met with Deputy Governor Hamzat earlier today. During the meeting, Dr. Hamzat formally shared his intentions regarding the upcoming governorship election.

The Governor’s media team described the sit-down as “cordial,” reiterating that it was a routine consultation and should not be misinterpreted as a sign of a leadership crisis or health concerns.

The state government took a hard stance against the media platforms spreading the news, accusing them of a history of publishing sensationalist content.

While the Governor’s office typically chooses not to engage with every rumor, Akosile explained that the sensitive nature of the Governor’s health made it vital to provide the public with the correct information.

“In light of the growing disinformation, we feel it is crucial to address these malicious rumors. The people of Lagos deserve to know the truth,” he added. Residents are urged to ignore the claims and remain focused on the progress being made across the state.

In a related development, this online medium earlier reported that Governor Sanwo-Olu recently officially endorsed Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat for the 2027 Lagos governorship race.

This endorsement, which has been backed by several APC heavyweights and the Mandate Movement, underscores the continuity and political alignment within the current administration despite the various rumors circulating in the media.
