IGP Disu removes Akin Fakorede as head of police monitoring unit

CP Akin Fakorede has been removed as head of the IGP monitoring unit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The decision was ordered by the newly appointed IGP, Tunji Disu.

Fakorede, a former commander of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), was appointed to lead the IGP monitoring unit in December 2024 by ex-IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

His appointment had attracted criticism from human rights groups over allegations of brutality, extrajudicial killings, and election-related misconduct during his tenure in SARS.

Civil society organisations had raised concerns that his record could undermine public trust in the police monitoring unit.

Fakorede’s tenure at the unit was also marked by allegations of human rights violations and unprofessional conduct.

He was implicated in a controversial land dispute at River Park Estate in Abuja, where he was accused of showing bias against Ghanaian investors.

In January 2026, the unit under his leadership was accused of attacking journalists and workers during a protest at the estate.

In September 2025, Nyesom Wike, minister of the FCT, criticised Fakorede during a television interview.

Wike described Fakorede as a “killer” and accused him of brutality and interference in elections during his time as SARS commander in Rivers state.

Speaking on Channels Television, Wike said the police officer’s appointment to the IGP monitoring unit was troubling.
