Alleged Sexual Assault: ARM Pension Managers Executive Director Arrested, As Lagos Gov’t Intervenes

The Lagos State Government has taken significant action in response to a distressing case involving a female employee of ARM Pension Managers Limited. The case centers around allegations of rape against Abisola Gbonigi, the Executive Director (Technical) of the firm.

Cecilia Dada, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), confirmed the state’s involvement in a recent interview. She revealed that beyond the immediate legal action—Gbonigi is currently in police custody—the state government is also focusing on the emotional and psychological well-being of the alleged victim.

According to Dada, the Lagos State Government was alerted to the rape allegations shortly after they emerged. The government has been actively working with ARM Pension Managers to ensure that the victim receives the necessary support and assistance.

The company has reportedly engaged a psychologist to provide counseling to the victim and hired a private investigator to assist with the case, which is now under police scrutiny.

Dada emphasized that WAPA’s efforts include working closely with law enforcement to ensure justice. She noted the state’s firm stance against domestic and gender-based violence, reaffirming Lagos State’s zero tolerance for such offenses.

“We have attempted to reach out to the woman, but she has not responded to any calls,” Dada said. “However, we are assured that the company has arranged for psychological support, and the police are actively investigating the matter.”

The alleged victim had initially reported the incident to ARM Pension Managers, detailing a harrowing experience. She claimed that Gbonigi drove her to a hotel following an office party, where she was allegedly drugged and assaulted. The victim reported waking up disoriented, with bruising and soreness, and finding her personal belongings in disarray.

In her report, the victim expressed her frustration over the situation and urged the Lagos State Government to ensure that justice is served, including the prosecution of Gbonigi and any involved accomplices.

ARM Pension Managers has responded to the allegations by expressing their deep concern and commitment to handling the matter with the highest level of seriousness. In a statement, the company expressed their support for the victim and condemned the incident, which reportedly occurred on July 18, 2024, following an office team bonding event.

The firm underscored their commitment to addressing the issue promptly and sensitively, reiterating that such behavior is unacceptable within their organization and society at large.
