The Editor Nigeria had reported earlier that a chopper transporting the Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe, crashed and killed him as well as about five others in California, United States of America.

Sources told TheWill News that the chopper was headed to Las Vegas when it crashed near a border city between Nevada and California on Friday night. Daily Mail also reports that six people were feared dead after the horrific helicopter crash in California marking the state’s second fatal accident in under a week.

Officials said the helicopter crashed near Nipton on the edge of the Mojave Desert late on Friday evening, February 9, 2024. The helicopter, a Eurocopter EC 130, had been carrying six people onboard at the time of the incident.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, Herbert Wigwe was involved in a helicopter crash in California near the Nevada border, United States of America. Wigwe, his wife, and son were in the helicopter when it crashed in California near the Nevada border, as well as Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the former group chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX Group).

Is Herbert Wigwe Dead?

Herbert Wigwe has been reported dead. Wigwe was said to have died following a helicopter crash in California near the Nevada border, United States of America. New York Times reports that no survivors have been located as of Saturday morning, the authorities said.

The helicopter carrying six people crashed in San Bernardino County overnight, with authorities saying they have been unable to locate any survivors. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said they had been made aware of the downed aircraft near Baker shortly after 10 pm on Friday.

In a statement, they said, “We are not able to confirm how many people were on board or their names. No survivors have been located.”

The FAA confirmed that the Eurocopter EC 130 crashed near Nipton on the edge of the Mojave Desert Preserve, and is east of the 15 Freeway near Halloran Springs. According to NBC, the helicopter is registered to a Burbank-based tour company called Orbic Air.

Meanwhile, the Editor Nigeria reports that the incident is coming  just days after a Navy chopper carrying five troops crashed during a routine training flight in Pine Valley, California.

What US Said About Herbert Wigwe’s Ill-Fated Helicopter

The United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has provided an update on the crash of a helicopter carrying the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, Herbert Wigwe, and his family.

Speaking during a media briefing held at 6 pm Pacific time on Saturday, the NTSB board member, Michael Graham, said officials were on the scene to gather perishable evidence.

Graham said the team was methodically and systematically reviewing all evidence and considering all potential factors to determine the probable cause of the crash.

He said although the information provided was only preliminary, witness reports suggested that a wintry weather condition was among the factors that contributed to the accident.

Graham said the chopper had two crew members and four passengers, “all of whom were fatally injured”.

He said: “The crew consisted of a pilot in command and a safety pilot. The accident flight was operated by Orbic Air LLC as a Part 135 charter flight.

“Witness reports of the weather conditions at the time of the accident suggest rain and a wintry mix.

“The helicopter was not equipped with a cockpit voice recorder or a flight data recorder. This helicopter was not required to be equipped with those types of recording devices.”

Graham stated that the NTSB would look into the chopper’s airworthiness, which includes maintenance and structure of the helicopter, operations, meteorology, and air traffic control.

He added: “Parties to the investigation include the FAA and Orbic Air LLC. As the investigation continues, other parties could be named.

“The BEA — the French aviation accident investigation agency — will serve as an accredited representative because France is a state of the manufacturer of the Airbus helicopter and the Turbomeca engine.”

Graham said documentation of the on-scene investigations will include aerial mapping of the wreckage with a drone and site measurements.

He said the NTSB will obtain flight crew records, helicopter maintenance records, and flight dispatch records from Orbic Air for documentation.

When asked about more information on the passengers, Graham said there were no details but added that “any names will be released through the coroner’s office” without specifying a time frame.

Graham said a report will be available in a “couple of weeks” but said a full NTSB investigation will last 12 to 24 months before a final report is published.
