Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Today, Sunday, 21st January, 2024

1. The Rivers State Police Command on Saturday, identified and arrested three Policemen accused of kidnapping and extorting the sum of $3,000 from a yet-to-be-identified man in Port Harcourt. The man was allegedly taken from PortHarcourt, the Rivers State capital and taken outside the state where he was forced to transfer the said sum before he was released.

2. A man, identified as Safiu Kareem, has cried out over the abduction of his father, Akeem Kareem and a yet-to-be-identified number of persons in the Ofosu area of the Benin-Ore Expressway. Safiu said the bandits, who abducted the victims on Wednesday afternoon, were “already demanding money”.

3. Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule has disclosed that he is done with political contests in his life as he was only interested in becoming Governor of Nasarawa State and not any other political office, not even the President of Nigeria. Governor Sule advised his opponent, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, David Umbugadu, to wait for his turn since age is still on his side.

4. The four remaining siblings of the late Nabeeha Al-Kadriyah, a little girl kidnapped and killed by bandits for failure to pay her ransom, have regained their freedom. The sisters were abducted alongside their father in early January.

5. The Lagos State Police Command has narrated a shocking account of how a Nigerian seeking asylum abroad asked the police to declare him wanted. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) had in December 2023 said no fewer than 260,000 Nigerians approached the IOM for assistance to leave the country in 2023.

6. Amid the rising wave of insecurity in Abuja, Abdullahi Sabo, a resident of the nation’s capital, has been abducted. Sabo was heading home with his wife when gunmen intercepted his vehicle at Sabon- Lugbe, Airport road in the nation’s capital and took him away.

7. Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has said the burial of the late former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu won’t be a gloomy affair but a celebration of life. Aiyedatiwa also said Akeredolu would be given a state burial, adding that his family is being awaited for further briefing on the burial rites.

8. At least one person has been confirmed dead and many others injured following an explosion that rocked Kidandan village in the Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Samuel Aruwan, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday night.

9. The Nigeria Police, on Saturday, paraded a notorious Abuja kidnapper, Chinaza Philip-Okoye on a stretcher at the Force Intelligence Response Team base, Guzape, Federal Capital Territory. The suspect sustained serious injuries after he was shot by police officers following the interception of his gang at a filling station on Thursday night.

10. The Lagos State Police Command has commended residents of the Adamo area of Ikorodu for apprehending a suspect identified simply as Babalola, who was allegedly in possession of a human skull. It was gathered that the residents handed over the suspect, said to be an Imam in the area, to the police.
