Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Today, Wednesday, 6th December, 2023

Good morning Nigeria, welcome to the Editor roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Wednesday, 6th December 2023.

1. The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions, on Tuesday, issued a warrant of arrest on the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Mr Olayemi Cardoso, the Accountant General of the Federation, Mrs Oluwatoyin Madein and 17 others for refusing to appear before it to answer questions on their operations.

2. The presidential candidate of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed sadness over the Sunday night bombing by the Nigerian Army that killed dozens at Tundun Biri, Kaduna State, during Maulud celebration. The former Kano State governor described the incident as another gory episode of security agencies, calling on the relevant authorities to ensure justice is served.

3. Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, on Tuesday paid a visit to Kaduna State following the Nigerian Army drone strikes on Sunday night that led to the death of over 80 civilians during Maulud celebration in Tudun Biri village.

4. The Supreme Court on Tuesday came hard again on another senior lawyer. It slammed a N40 million cost on Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) for aiding the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the 2019 governorship election in Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha, to file what the court termed a frivolous motion.

5. All Progressives Congress (APC) elders in Benue State, led by former Senate President, Ahmed Ebute, have waded into the crisis between Governor Hyacinth Alia and the chapter. The 23 APC local government chairmen had accused the governor of not carrying the party along in the affairs of the state.

6. Three hundred and eighty-nine incidents of oil theft were recorded within two weeks, two documentaries by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) have shown. The documentaries were on the collaboration between security operatives and surveillance contractor – Tantita Security Services Limited on the battle against oil thieves in a bid to eradicate the menace.

7. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on Tuesday, raised the alarm that most departments and units in Nigeria’s public universities were short-staffed due to the resignation of lecturers in search of greener pastures. The Chairman of the University of Ibadan Chapter of ASUU, Prof. Ayo Akinwole, who disclosed this in Ibadan, Oyo State, said Nigeria’s public universities were in very pitiable conditions with stress and frustration.

8. A resident of Tudun Biri in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Idris Dahiru, has disclosed losing 34 members of his family to the Nigerian Army’s aerial accidental bombing that happened Sunday evening. The incident has left no fewer than 85 villagers dead.

9. The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of four operatives involved in the alleged abduction of a hotel staff in Port Harcourt and consequently demanding a ransom to release him. The hotel staff simply identified as Darlington was reportedly arrested on his way to work at about 8 pm last Friday when the police officers accosted him near Choba in Obio/Akpor Local Government area of the State.

10. The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Imo State, Charles Ugwu, has been suspended. The party disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by the state secretary, Njaka Duruiheoma. The statement indicated that Ugwu, a former Minister of Commerce and Industry, was suspended over alleged misconduct.
