The total confirmed cases of the covid-19 disease in Nigeria crossed the 200,000 mark on Monday, 14th September 2021. This is according to the daily update of the covid-19 disease in Nigeria as released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

On Monday, a total of 519 new confirmed cases of the disease were recorded in Nigeria, taking the total case toll to 200,057 cases with 188,719 patients already discharged.

Also, 18 covid-related deaths were recorded on Monday, raising the total death count to 2,637. The total cases still currently on admission are 8,701, while a total of 2.94 million tests have been carried out in the country.

The 519 new cases were reported from 15 states, which include Lagos (120), Ondo (110), Rivers (74), Edo (63), FCT (58), Oyo (31), Kaduna (15), Bayelsa (11), Cross River (11), Delta (11), Kano (5), Ogun (4), Plateau (3), Adamawa (2), and Gombe (1).

Meanwhile, the agency stated that a multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC), activated at Level 2, continues to coordinate the national response activities.

Nigeria joins the likes of South Africa, Morocco, and 7 others who have recorded over 200,000 cases from inception till date on the continent. According to data from worldometer, South Africa has recorded 2.86 million confirmed cases of the disease, followed by Morocco with 908,349.

Others on the African continent with the highest confirmed cases include Tunisia (695,406), Libya (326,370), Ethiopia (325,951), Egypt (293,951), Kenya (244,380), Zambia (208,049), Algeria (200,528), and Nigeria (200,057).

It is worth noting that, so far in the month of September a total of 7,545 cases of the disease have been recorded, compared to 8,054 cases recorded as of the comparable period of August and 1,297 cases in the same period of July 2021.

What Covid-19 Surge In Nigeria Means

The consistent rise in the number of cases in the country indicates that the disease is still very much at large in Nigeria especially with the highly transmittable Delta variant of the disease. Lagos State continues to bear a huge brunt, due to its strategic position as the economic hub of the nation and its housing of one of the most used international airports in the country.
