Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will today present new cars to 13 outstanding teachers in the state’s employ during the Teachers Merit Award.

They were among the finalists that participated in a retreat held at Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja as part of screening for the award.

This year, the selection process of winners was redesigned and handled by a committee comprising seasoned private-sector educator and chaired by Mrs. Lai Koiki of Greenspring School.

Speaking with the teachers during the retreat yesterday, Lagos State Education Commissioner Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo praised them for making it to the semi-final.

She said the government was pleased with them and that they would be recognised as ambassadors of the teaching profession.

Adefisayo said the government nominated a committee of professionals in the private sector to manage the screening to ensure merit.

She advised the teachers to ensure that they use the retreat to learn new skills that will enhance productivity and better service delivery in the profession.

Koiki underscored the role teachers play in the transformation of Lagos State, as they have to groom children for a better future.

She hailed the Lagos State Government for identifying the need to appreciate teachers and motivate them for better performances.

Ogundimu in Ifako-Ijaye Local Government of Lagos State,

The ruling family, addressing reporters in Ota, Ogun State, said the family was yet to hear information concerning approval that would lead to the installation of their candidate, three years after the selection was made with the required documents submitted to the Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Commission, through the Department of Chieftaincy Affairs in Ifako-Ijaye Local Government.

The family said: “The gazetted document indicates the three ruling houses in the town, namely Ogundimu, Ilupokiki and Aganran. The late King Olanire was from Ogundimu Ruling House, while Prince Tajudeen Olanrewaju Sunmonu is the candidate presented by the Ilupokiki Omolomo Ruling House.

“Since the transition to afterlife of Oba Olanire, efforts have been made to fill the vacant stool. One of which was the vacancy notice made public by the chieftaincy department of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government on September 12, 2018 and signed by the Council Manager, Ogunbambi A. A.

“The notice directed the next ruling house, Ilupokiki Chieftaincy Family of Iju-Ogundimu, to put forward the next candidate to occupy the vacant stool within the next 30 days from the date of the public notice, a directive which, according to the family, had been acted upon before the expiration of the 30 days.”

The family head, Alhaji Rahmon Asalu, said some of the findings made at the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs showed that documents relating to the vacant stool and candidate application had not got to the Chieftaincy Affairs Ministry, though the requested applications and documents were submitted to the Ifako-Ijaye Local Government Department of Chieftaincy Affairs.

He said a look at the Lagos State chieftaincy declaration regulating the selection to the stool of Oba of Iju- Ogundimu chieftaincy title buttressed the rotational arrangement among the three ruling families.

The Ilupokiki Omolomo Family said it is taking the opportunity to appeal to Governor Sanwo-Olu to investigate the delay in filling the vacant stool, in accordance with the rules and laws guiding Lagos State chieftaincy installation.
