Police have assured that normalcy has returned in the Obalende area of Lagos following a clash between rival groups of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

Gunshots were fired on Thursday morning in the scuffle between the groups, raising tension in the area.

However, in a tweet, the Rapid Response Squad said policemen are now stationed in strategic points to maintain law and order.

“Normalcy has returned to Obalende as police officers are stationed in its strategic points,” the tweet read.

The Spokesperson said no life was lost, noting that the crisis, was between transport unions in the area.
He said, “Six suspected hoodlums have been arrested and handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department CID, Panti, Yaba for discreet Investigations.

Similarly, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has warned that the command will not condone any act of lawlessness and criminality in the state.

The CP has directed the area commander Area A, Lion Building, ACP Bode Ojajuni, to intensify efforts on flushing the hoodlums out of the area and on the Lagos Island in general, with the available recourses deployed to the area command.

He said the leaders of the transport unions in the area, have been invited for interrogation and further actions.

However, Chairman of the NURTW Lagos Council, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (aka MC Oluomo), has accused members of the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) of attacking his members in a bid to take over the park (garage) at Obalende.

He described their actions as uncalled for, urging the RTEAN leadership to seek an audience with the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation if aggrieved with the present regulations.

According to him, each union has its own garage.

He wondered why RTEAN would resort to attacking his members at the NURTW-controlled parks.
