Sanwo-Olu Warns Lagosians About COVID-19 Second Wave, Mulls Another Lockdown

Following the second wave of the pandemic in Nigeria, the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has warned residents of the state to take the COVID19 protocols seriously as the state government is not interested in going on another lockdown.

Theeditorng.com reports that Sanwo-Olu made the appeal on his social media handles on Tuesday night, January 5.
He wrote on his Instagram handle:

“Dear Lagosians,
There is urgent need for us to be more circumspect in the way we live, interact and socialize with our friends and family. Many people are ignoring #COVID19 warnings and guidelines, thereby exposing themselves and others to the virus

We are well into the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic which came between November and December 2020.

Yesterday, Lagos scarily recorded its highest number of infections in one day (712). Which means as at 4th of January, we have already recorded a frightening spike in infection cases. The highest since the beginning of the pandemic.

This spike brings positive cases to a total of 32,720 in Lagos alone.

This second wave came with severe symptoms, and the higher number of positive cases we detect, the higher number of casualties we’re bound to record. We do not pray for this, but for this to be avoided, we must be intentional and cautious.
We also do not want to go into another lockdown, as this will affect the livelihood of citizens and ultimately the economy of our state and country. Therefore, wear your masks, avoid crowded areas, wash or sanitize your hands regularly, and practice social distancing.
2021 will only work for us if we take #COVID19 seriously and follow the guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Health.
We simply cannot afford to be complacent at this time.
Thank You.”
