Nigerians consumed about 1.66 million terabytes of data in July 2026, representing an increase of nearly 47 percent compared with the 1.13 million terabytes recorded in the same month of 2025, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said.
The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, disclosed this while delivering the welcome remarks at the maiden Nigeria Digital Connectivity Investment Forum organised by the Commission.
Maida said the sharp increase in data consumption reflects the growing demand for digital connectivity and underscores the need for continued investment in Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure.
According to him, connectivity has become increasingly important to the modern economy, with demand for digital services rising rapidly and consistently over the years.
He noted that the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 recognises the importance of encouraging investment in the communications sector and gives the NCC a responsibility to facilitate such investments.
Maida stressed that Nigeria must sustain investments in digital connectivity to meet the growing demand for telecommunications services and support the country’s digital economy.
“For Nigeria to keep pace, we must continue to sustain investments both to expand networks and to improve the experience of people already connected,” he said.
The NCC chief executive said the investment forum was an opportunity to bring stakeholders together to discuss ways of strengthening digital connectivity and creating an environment that would attract further investment into Nigeria’s communications sector.
