The University of Jos has suspended all examinations scheduled for Monday and Tuesday following rising tension in Jos after a deadly attack in Anguwan Rukuba, located in Jos North Local Government Area.
The institution’s management also urged students and staff to remain indoors and stay alert.
Eyewitnesses said gunmen riding on motorcycles invaded the community at about 7:30 p.m., opening fire indiscriminately and causing widespread panic among residents.
Several people were reportedly killed in the attack, while many others sustained injuries.
In the aftermath, angry youths allegedly blocked major roads in the area and attacked motorcycle riders and passengers.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, said the incident had heightened tension in and around the university community, prompting the decision to suspend examinations.
“In view of the fatal attacks by unknown gunmen on residents of Anguwan Rukuba, an area that accommodates many staff and students of the university and the tension it has generated, the Vice-Chancellor has directed that all examinations scheduled for Monday, March 30, and Tuesday, March 31, 2026, be postponed and rescheduled,” the statement read.
The university also advised members of its community to remain vigilant and exercise caution in their movements both on and off campus.
“For emphasis, members are strongly advised to avoid coming out very early in the morning and to report any sign of security breach to the University Security Division,” the statement added.
The management noted that it is working closely with relevant security agencies and continues to monitor the situation, assuring that further updates will be communicated as necessary.
