Buba Galadima accuses Tinubu of pushing one-party agenda in Nigeria

Alhaji Buba Galadima, elder statesman and a chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has declared that Nigeria is at a crossroads ahead of the 2027 general election.

Galadima spoke in Abuja when he received an editorial team from the Daily Sun, warning of grave danger with the resurgence of insecurity across the country.

He accused President Bola Tinubu of pursuing an undemocratic agenda aimed at establishing a one-party state, but stated that the project would fail.

He predicted that Nigerians would speak loudly against the APC in 2027, saying it would a defining moment for the country.

He said: “They want to be declared winners unopposed. And I want to tell you it is not possible in Nigeria, and if they try to break the will of Nigerians, they will end up breaking themselves.”

He questioned what he called attempts to weaken other political parties, saying such actions were unnecessary.

He argued that governors joining one party does not guarantee electoral victory, adding that Nigeria cannot progress unless the country defines its goals and follows a clear plan.

Galadima criticised Tinubu’s admonition to judges, asking: “How can Tinubu admonish judges, saying that justice should not be for sale? Who are the buyers of justice?”

He blamed former vice-president Atiku Abubakar and President Tinubu for what he described as the pollution of democracy between 2003 and now.

He said Nigeria cannot reach its desired destination under the current political climate, due to what he termed the absence of a national developmental plan.

He accused the legislature of failing in its duty by approving all executive requests without scrutiny, adding that lawmakers even grant retrospective approvals for borrowing.

“There is danger ahead. Clearly, I can see it. We look up to the media to intercede because at the rate we are going towards a one-party system, we need help,” he added.

He wondered why Tinubu, who was declared winner of the 2023 election, appears determined to bring every governor under the APC.

Galadima expressed concern that recent developments suggest the government may not want to conduct elections in 2027.

He, however, assured that elections will hold, warning that democracy requires alternative views and said the absence of dissent leads to dictatorship.

He questioned the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway and suggested that the money could have been used to construct 5,000 kilometres of railway that would benefit more people.

Galadima lamented that Nigerians cannot speak through their representatives at the National Assembly because lawmakers have “sold out”.

The elder statesman said he has repeatedly warned about the state of the country, adding that his past warnings have not led to change.
