Good morning Nigeria, welcome to the Editor roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Friday, 6th October 2023.

1. The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 poll, Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday, said he did not betray President Bola Tinubu, over the allegation of certificate forgery he levelled against him at the court. Rather, he said the former Lagos State governor abandoned him, as well as the Action Congress of Nigeria and supported Umaru Yar’Adua of the PDP in the 2007 presidential poll.

2. Many petroleum products depots are currently deserted due to lack of products caused by foreign exchange rate volatility, as the landing cost of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, has increased to N720/litre, oil marketers said on Thursday. It was further gathered that the landing cost of PMS into Nigeria had increased to N720/litre, up from N651/litre in August this year.

3. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to accept his loss in the 2023 presidential election. Atiku, who ran on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), came second in the election. He had challenged the victory of the president in court, but lost as the Presidential Tribunal struck out his petition.

4. Kalu Kalu, one of the lawyers of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said one of the documents released by Chicago State University (CSU) showed that Tinubu allegedly forged the certificate of a black American. He stated this while responding to questions at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

5. The Nigerian naira has weakened by 40 percent since the mid June 2023 devaluation, making it one of the worst-performing currencies in Sub-Saharan Africa, the World Bank has said. The World Bank said this in its report titled, “Africa’s Pulse: An analysis of issues shaping Africa’s economic future (October 2023 | Volume 28).”

6. Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the February 25 general election, Peter Obi insisted yesterday he is pursuing his case at the Supreme Court to get justice and not to join with Atiku Abubakar. The former Anambra State Governor, in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said he was at the Supreme Court to “reclaim his mandate.”

7. The Supreme Court has fixed December 15 for judgment in the appeals filed by the Federal Government against the detained leader of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. A five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, chose the date yesterday after lawyer to the Federal Government, Tijani Gazali (SAN), and counsel to Kanu, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), made their final submissions.

8. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that at least 15 states across the country will experience moderate to heavy rainfall in the next three days. The weather agency also said 18 states will experience strong winds between today and tomorrow. The weather predictions are contained in NiMet’s latest edition of impact-based weather forecast bulletin issued on Thursday.

9. Ondo State Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has asked the Chief Judge to ignore the directive to set up a probe panel by the House of Assembly. Writing through his lawyer, Mr. Ebun Olu-Adegboruwa, he said it would be a contempt of court to proceed with the impeachment process when the parties were involved in two cases in the Federal High Court, Abuja and State High Court, Akure.

10. The Senate has urged the Federal Government to resettle the over 1.5 million Benue residents who were displaced by bandits. The legislature also asked the Federal Government to redeem the N10bn promise made to the people of Benue to rebuild the destroyed communities.
