The Federal Government has prevented the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, from signing two forms for consular and diplomatic interventions from the United Kingdom.
One of the lawyers to the leader of the outlawed group, Mr Aloy Ejimakor, disclosed this on Monday in a statement titled: ‘Summary of my visitation to our client, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on Monday, July 19’.
Ejimakor called on the British High Commission in Nigeria to exert the full weight of its diplomatic clout to gain immediate access to Kanu.
He alleged that the Federal Government, through the Department of State Services, had blocked Kanu from signing the forms, thereby denying him from giving his consent for consular and diplomatic assistance.
The statement read in part: “Last Saturday, when I visited Mazi Kanu, I expressed strong concerns about the inordinate delay in having Kanu sign the two forms I had taken to the DSS for his signature some days before.
“Both forms relate to affirming his consent to consular and diplomatic interventions by the United Kingdom and her High Commission in Nigeria.
“Surprisingly, the forms were returned to me unsigned.â€
Ejimakor explained that the refusal to allow his client to sign the forms would help fuel the notion that the government of Nigeria was deliberately isolating Kanu from having consular and diplomatic access to the UK.
