Makinde Set To Become Chairman Of ‘One-man PDP Govs Forum’ – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has said Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is on the verge of emerging as the chairman of what it described as a “one-man” Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum.

The party said the development reflects what it termed the dwindling relevance and internal collapse of the opposition party.

This online medium reports that in a statement issued on Saturday, the Lagos APC spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, said the ongoing wave of defections by PDP governors into the ruling party had stripped the opposition of its credibility and structure.

According to him, the situation within the PDP signals a deeper crisis of leadership and direction.

“Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State now stands on the brink of emerging as the de facto Chairman of a ‘one-man PDP Governors Forum’, a development that perfectly captures the depth of the party’s collapse. What was once a collective leadership platform has been reduced to a lonely outpost of dwindling influence,” he said.

Oladejo argued that the steady exit of governors and key stakeholders from the PDP was not accidental but a clear rejection of the party’s leadership.

“Let it be said plainly, this is not coincidence; it is rejection. The steady exodus of governors and key stakeholders is a direct vote of no confidence in the PDP’s leadership, its lack of ideological clarity, and its chronic inability to resolve internal crises. Those who know the party best are walking away from it,” he added.

He further stated that a party unable to manage its internal affairs could not be trusted with governing a complex country like Nigeria.

“A political party that cannot keep its house in order, that haemorrhages its own elected leaders, and that offers no coherent direction cannot, and should not- be entrusted with the governance of a complex nation like Nigeria. The PDP’s current state is not just a failure; it is a cautionary tale,” Oladejo said.

The APC spokesman also expressed concern over what he described as the broader implications for Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the collapse of opposition politics could weaken democratic balance.

“Even more troubling is the broader implication for Nigeria’s democracy. What we are witnessing is the collapse of responsible opposition politics, undermined by ego clashes, indiscipline, and a fixation on power without preparation. Nigerians deserve an opposition that is credible, organised, and ready, not one that is imploding in real time,” he stated.

‘Opposition Must Learn From APC’

Oladejo urged opposition parties to adopt strategies similar to those used by the APC during its years in opposition.

“Opposition parties must, as a matter of urgency, borrow from the APC’s tested playbook during its years in opposition—years defined by sacrifice, resilience, discipline, and strategic patience.

“The APC did not stumble into power; it built trust, earned legitimacy, and presented Nigerians with a clear and compelling alternative. That pathway remains available, but it requires hard work, not shortcuts,” he said.

He, however, criticised what he described as opportunism within the opposition camp.

“Instead, today’s opposition seems trapped in a cycle of opportunism, where personal ambition overrides collective purpose, and where the pursuit of power has become an end in itself rather than a means to serve,” he added.

This online medium reports that the Lagos APC maintained that it remains committed to governance and strengthening democratic institutions.

“While others scatter and self-destruct, we continue to consolidate on progressive governance, deliver measurable results, and strengthen democratic institutions in the interest of all Nigerians,” the statement added.
