Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Today, Wednesday, 8th November, 2023

1. Organized Labour has declared a total and indefinite nationwide strike, starting from Tuesday, November 14, 2023. The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, disclosed this after an emergency meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

2. President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday, appointed Dr Abdu Mukhtar as the National Coordinator of the Presidential ‘Unlocking Healthcare Value-Chain’ Initiative domiciled under the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. The president’s spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, who made the announcement via a statement, said Mukhtar’s appointment “seeks to unlock billions of dollars of new investment into the nation’s healthcare delivery system.”

3. The Appeal court sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, affirmed the victory of the Minister of Labour and Employment and former governor of Plateau state, Barrister Simon Bako Lalong, as senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District. Lalong contested the election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

4. The presidency has disclosed that President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration is working on policies that will strengthen the Naira. A Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, Tope Fasua, disclosed this at the “Cowries to Cash” lecture and lunch in Abuja on Tuesday.

5. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday, announced that there will be no vehicular movement as well as movement of canoe, ships and other means of transportation via waterways in Imo, Kogi and Bayelsa starting from Friday. Egbetokun said the decision was in line with measures put in place to ensure free, fair and credible elections in the three states.

6. Foreign airlines and other business owners have been told to meet their banks to clear the foreign exchange (FX) forwards backlog. A senior Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) official confirmed the directive from the apex bank on Tuesday.

7. No fewer than five people have died and several others wounded after bandits armed with sophisticated weapons attacked Sayaya village in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. The fresh attack came on Monday night. A security official, whose name was withheld, confirmed the incident, on Tuesday.

8. A yet-to-be-identified middle-aged man was feared dead, yesterday, while five others sustained various degrees of injuries when irate youths went on a rampage at Iyiowa-Odekpe Community, in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, triggered by last Monday’s Iyiowa-Odekpe landlords’ association election. No fewer than 30 vehicles, 20 buildings, and other property, estimated at over N100 million, were equally destroyed.

9. Members of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, on Tuesday stormed the Police headquarters in Abuja protesting the killing of three policemen and some members of the party at Anyigba, Kogi State. Governorship candidate of the party in the November 11 election, Muritala Yakubu Ajaka, led the protest.

10. An appeal court sitting in Lagos has affirmed the election of Ibori-Suenu Erhiatake, a member representing Ethiope East/Ethiope West Federal Constituency of Delta State and the daughter of the former Governor of the State, Mr James Ibori. The lawmaker, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, floored Ben Igbakpa of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Halims Ahoda of the All Progressives Congress, and Ogboru Etabunor of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
