The Federal Government has revealed that up to 9 million pupils nationwide are beneficiaries of the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP).

This was disclosed by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Hajia Sadiya on Tuesday in Makurdi at the handing-over of cooking utensils to the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) primary school, Wurukum.

She disclosed that the school feeding programme is one of the administration’s policies to lift 100 million out of poverty, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

What the Minister is saying

The Minister said that “100,000 cooks were engaged in the programme across the country”, adding that the scheme is “a collaborative venture with the federal government, seeking to boost school enrolment, enhance the nutritional value of pupils and impact the local economy

“The programme had created employment within the school feeding ecosystem in sectors of transportation and manufacturing.”

The minister also stated that the Humanitarian Ministry also identified areas of improvement to scale up the programme with an additional five million beneficiaries, including a nationwide enumeration exercise with the objective of data verification, upgrading the quality of data and updating existing records to accommodate the scaling exercise.

She pledge that the programme would undergo review to ensure it fulfilled its objectives and promised improved service delivery in the programme.
